Studying at home is an everyday concern for families, often creating explosive situations. Not because children don't want to study, but because they struggle to find an effective way to meet their obligations. And that stresses them out.
But why do they struggle so much, and why can't we help them more effectively? Simply because they are using old techniques, solutions, and strategies they learned at a younger age, when they had different abilities. The answer in such cases is skill development. Cognitive flexibility, also known as out-of-the-box thinking can have a beneficial effect.
The Daily Challenge
— Did you do your homework for school?
— No.
And just like that… the tension begins. Parents and children feel pressured, complain, and clash.
Understanding the Struggle
Studying at home is an everyday concern for families. Not because children don't want to study, but because they struggle to find an effective way to meet their obligations and succeed. And that stresses them out.
But why do they struggle so much, and why can't we help them more effectively?
As education progresses, the material becomes more demanding, distractions increase, and expectations grow. Children—and especially teenagers—change and develop new skills. Yet they often leave these skills unused simply because they are not aware of their potential. The way we teach them often prevents them from evolving.
So, what do they do?
They use what they've learned. They apply old techniques, solutions, and strategies learned at a younger age—when they had different capabilities—to new situations with a completely different dynamic. And when they fail… they either repeat the same approach or give up. We often do the same ourselves.
And the worst part… this way, they don't develop.
Private tutoring is definitely not the solution—at least not if our goal is to build important life skills rather than just meeting school requirements.
The ReMindSet Approach
The answer in such cases is skill development. Cognitive flexibility—also known as out-of-the-box thinking—is the ability to quickly understand changing conditions and find effective solutions. It's a vital skill, but it takes work and the right support to develop.
At ReMindSet, this is exactly what we work on.
We create an environment that fosters a creative way of thinking.
